Did you know your tax dollars are paying for overweight wives of servicemen to get Gastric bypass? They also pay for breast augmentation when the woman has no physical reason to receive them, i.e. health, accidents. I don’t find this appropriate. Do you? Why are we paying for this when the troops are the ones who need the money?
And yes, I do know the women who have had this done.
zebra fish you’re an idiot. the US gov is paying for their surgeries, not directly out your own pocket. if you want to date someone who doesn’t care for herself or her health and then take the option (surgery) other than hard work and everyone else has to pay for it, its not right.
First of all, the women i know are not morbidly obese in any matter. They are simply lazy and they aren’t getting this surgery to save their lives. Why is so honorable to sit at home without a job living off of the gov, its no different than the ideas of welfare. I do not in any way downgrade the sacrifices that military families make, my husband is in the corp so maybe you shouldn’t pass judgement either until you;ve met these "fine" ladies.
If you’re so worried that this issue is about cost incurred over the lifetime of an overweight person, they why not offer personal trainers and nutritionist instead of risky surgery that if the person doesn’t stay on a healthy diet, they just gain the weight back.
yes, I work as the research director at a cosmetic surgery clinic. We have a doctor here that used to be a Cosmetic Dermatologist in the Navy…. injecting restylane, Botox, Lipo, etc…. I found it very surprising that the millitary had these "essential" services available, but not enough cash to buy proper flack jackets for marines… ironic? or moronic? you tell me…
That is sick. Its not right. How can people like that live with themselves.
Just don’t seem fair to me either. But, what I hear is that this gives the physicians up-to-date experience, and that they are better at treating war wounds by having done this other stuff.
Ok, im in the service and if I’m dating an overweight woman who wants this surgery i’d have to pay for it anyways.. So WHY are you complaining about the goverment giving the soldiers women ( and even the soldiers themselves if you think about it ) another benefit that they obviously deserve?
so it doesn’t have to look at fat ugly people
Doubt it.
I completely disagree w/ it too. My friend’s older sister’s husband is in the military and she’s having a boob job and tummy tuck on us.
I guess service is to be rewarded. The better question is why did their wives get fat. It appears everyone will have a bob job one day, here is a question after a boob job are you a cyborg?
it’s probably not their mandate to allow this kind of thing…i’d say the servicemen and their wives are manipulating the system.
many of your tax dollars are fraudulently spent…live with it or do something about it are your options.
i dont either thats just not fair for our tax dollars to pay for that
Paying for gastric bypass surgery is a matter of economics. The surgery is far less expensive than the cost of treatment from other problems caused by obesity. Private insurance companies also realize this, and will often pay as well.
They are doing anything possible to keep people in the military these days. Everyone is trying to jump ship because of the war. The Army is even letting people stay in that have tested positive on drug tests or have gone AWOL.
yes it is very appropriate. I am not in the business to tell people what to do with their bodies or how to spend money. If it makes them feel better, then they should do it. That gastric surgery makes overweight people more healthy. People do not tell you what ot use you insurance for. Don’t get in other peoples business. Our troops work hard to keep this country safe, and they do not need you medeling and gosspiing about their personal issues. If you dont like it, leave the country. It would be much more expensive to let an overweight person stay fat and incur many health problems, strokes, heartattacks and other weight related problems down the road. in, fact the military is saving themselves money down the raod by helping the weight problem now. You did not think that before you were so judgemental did you? Reasearch before you run your mouth.
are you saying that while there husbands fighting in Iraq, there fat wives over here are getting even fatter….??????????
Because our government and Military just LOVE to waste tax dollars. Look what I’ve done with your money. Eh eh eh…!
- George W. Bush
It’s probably part of their health benefits or insurance package.
It shouldn’t be covered, but if your insurance or your husbands insurance covered it, you probably wouldn’t think twice about it if you wanted to get something similar done.
Insurance companies pay the same thing for spouses of milkmen, truck drivers, cops, bankers, etc. etc. etc…..
Why in the world should our armed forces be offered less than the civilian world – they are out there dying for their country – don’t you think their spouses deserve the same thing as everyone else…just how GD selfish are you???
In the long run, it is cheaper for gastric by-pass surgery than the huge medical costs of treating other diseases/illnesses associated with obesity (you have to be at least 100 pounds overweight to have the surgery). Are the procedures being done at a military facility? If so, the costs are incredibly less than if I were to walk into a facility and request this procedure.
Breast augmentation? Mmm. New one to me. I know a lot of wives of servicemen as well as ret miliary personnel/spouses. That doesn’t sound right.
gastric bypass is NOT a cosmetic option. It’s reserved for people who are morbily obese (100+ lbs overweight), who have tried for years to lose weight, and who are now in immediate danger of hospitalization or death. Morbily obese people are at very high risk for heart attack & diabetes. Many are already in treatment for weight related problems, and it really is a disability. The operation and follow-up have a high enough % of complication and death that people are turned away from the surgery. It is NOT optional.
Shame on you for passing judgement on women who took a big risk for a surgery to save their lives. And from a financial standpoint it’s far cheaper to return a person to health than to have them be disabled & sick for decades to come.
I know a person who is over 100+ lbs overweight despite years and years of weight watchers, dieting, doctors, and tests. He is miserable and doesn’t want to be this way. He can’t work. His body is failing and he’s only in his late 30s. His leg are swelling so bad the tissues aren’t draining even with medication. In one spot he had tissue/skin die off and needed a skin graft. He can barely walk. VERY sad. The gastric bypass may save his life.
I also can’t see ragging on benefits soldiers’ familes get in light of the fact they get such a tiny paycheck to begin with. They’re barely making ends meet. If it wasn’t for them, we’d have no national security.
It is paid for mostly by the insurance and the military members pay a fee for this. The rest is out of the members personal pay. My brother is in the Army and his wife had gastric bypass and she used his service pay for what insurance would not cover. The members get good pay and they can use the pay for what ever they want.
I think paying for breast augmentation is totally unnecessary. I can understand why they would pay for gastric bypass surgery though, and I agree with that…assuming the people having surgery are real candidates and meet all the requirements.
As someone who has struggled with a weight problem my whole life, I had gastric bypass surgery in October, 2001. I was 25 years old and weighed 345 pounds the day I went in. I lost 185 pounds and got my life back. For someone who has never had a weight problem, it’s easy enough to say "Oh, just go on a diet!" Much the same as non-smokers say "Just stop smoking!" In some cases (not for smoking, but for obesity) there are extenuating circumstances that prevent a person from losing weight the "old fashioned" way. Have you ever heard that old saying, "Never judge a man until you’ve walked a mile in his shoes?" I think that saying is very apropos here.
In most cases, people who have this surgery are morbidly obese and diets haven’t worked for them. How many different diets (including potentially unsafe ones), diet pills, exercise regimes, etc. do you think a person has to try before they are allowed to have surgery?
What really irritates me is that MY TAX DOLLARS are going to pay for some ghetto hood rat who can’t keep her legs closed and keeps popping out babies by different men, right and left. Every time you have a child, you get more WIC, more foodstamps, more medicaid.
I think this is horrible that they would pay for this. Most insurances won’t pay for this so why should the taxpayers foot the bill for these surgeries.
