My wife had gastric bypass. Neither one is completely safe. As with any surgery there is a chance of dying- even if you are perfectly healthy other than being obese. If you are trying to get either surgery, they will require you to be on some sort of doctor-administered diet for at least a year, and they are VERY strict about that. Then, you have to fight with your insurance agency to get approval.
Disclaimer: Obviously, regular exercise and a healthy diet are your best bet. Lifestyle modification is always preferable to surgery. However, if you’re morbidly obese and dead set on surgery, here’s my opinion:
Lap band is reversible, less invasive, adjustable, and far less disfiguring.
Gastric bypass permanently alters the anatomy and physiology of your GI tract. There are a lot of potential post-operative complications from a gastric bypass (e.g. fistula formation, leak, etc.). There are long term consequences, as well, such as chronic malabsorption, possible short-gut syndrome, chronic diarrhea, etc.
Definitely go with lap band.
Of course you should consult your doctor first.. But I know gastric bypass makes you sick and throw up if you over eat.. where as lap band claims to not have this kind of side effect..
Neither. That’s taking the easy way out and only treats the symptom, not the real problem- behavior.
Eat nutritious food and get regular exercise, and it won’t cost you a penny, and there are no dangerous surgeries.
With all due respect, I don’t understand this whole surgery thing for obesity. If the problem is that you eat too much food, don’t eat so much and get out and walk more or find some other sort of exersize that you enjoy.
This is SURGERY for pete’s sake. How bout excersizing self discipline instead?
Definitely lap band. It’s a much safer surgery and it can be adjusted. Hands down lap band.
