What is your opinion of Gastric Bypass Surgery? not the lap band…?

Weight loss surgery-like gastric bypass /lap band surgery / stomach stapling and gastrectomy have become very common and very safe now. My cousin got her Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery in India. She has lost more than 65 lbs in 5 months and is very happy with the results. The price for obesity surgery is very less in India. My cousin just paid 25% of the cost she was quoted in America. She got her surgery from a company called Forerunners Healthcare.
Forerunners Healthcare is very famous in India. I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and magazines. I have read a lot of their patient stories also. They arrange financing for USA, Canadian, UK and other international patients who plan to have surgery abroad for low cost, as bariatric surgery and weight loss surgery is not covered by insurance. As a doctor I personally believe that your Obesity surgery can be easily handled in India, as the quality of healthcare available In India is simply best in the world. It’s very risky, the long term benefits, effects are not known because it is a relatively recent procedure. Many people who opt for the procedure never relearn bad eating habits and stretch out their stomachs post surgery and continue to over indulge.
. I say do it if you cant lose the weight by yourself.
I don’t know everyone I’ve seen have the procedure done have kept the weight off for a while but they eventually get it back. Thats the only reason I wonder about it yano. Like Carnie Wilson for example she did great for a while then it was back to her old self and having to join celebrity fit club to lose it again. But it’s a personal choice. GOOD LUCK!
My aunt did the fully monty several years ago. Not only is she still overweight, but now she has major reflux issues and has had multiple infections within the pouch a.k.a. the shrunken stomach. She is a smart professional business woman who takes relatively good care of herself. She likes salty snacks, and finds herself drawn towards things that are easy to digest… Soups, fish, puree’d veggies, and of course ice cream.
I think if her diet had been more restricted, she would have lost the weight, but even the surgeon could not believe her size nor could he find a cause for the infections. She says all the time, if she could go back, she would not have done it. She wishes she had done the lap-band instead. The health risks and potental for side effects are much less with lap-band. Think long and hard before you sign either dotted line. The truth is, gastric procedures do not work if you do not practice self control/discipline. You can still be fat with a tiny stomach. It’s all about how bad you want something. You could save your money, and do it the tried and true way. I have personally lost 90lbs working out and eating a strict high protein/high fiber diet. I miss work outs here and there, and cheat every so often, but my skin has tightened up and my body is toned. It can be done, it’s just hard! 
But then again, recovering from a major surgery is pretty hard work too.

she was dreadfully ill for a full year following the surgery
she lost weight rapidly but her health has not improved as anticipated – in fact she’s in worse shape now than before the surgery
she has regained a good amount of the weight
in addition she has severe skin sores under the large flap of skin around her abdomen – it is very painful. she’s trying to get approval from the insurance company to pay to remove the skin flap, but it is iffy (they definitely won’t pay to remove the skin flaps on her upper arms or legs)
if she could go back and do it again, I’m not sure she would
make the decision very very carefully
My mom had it about 2 years ago and she lost about 110 lbs. There is so many side effects with it. She gets really bad stomach aches if she eats something that doesn’t agree with her. She has to take Beano if she eats anything like salads or other gassy foods. She cannot eat dairy products now because most people become lactose intolerent so she has to take lactose pills.
Now she is gaining weight and cannot seem to lose it. Alot of people tend to gain back after a few years.
I don’t recommend it
