What are the weight requirements for gastric bypass surgery?

Does a person have to be under a certain weight to be considered for bariatric bypass surgery (for weight reduction)? One hospital did say 450 lbs. was the maximum a patient could be.
Still, I’ve seen where folks alot heavier have it done, so wondered if it’s specific to the overall health of the patient or the doctor or the hospital or all of these? Does anyone know the guidelines? A family member is considering having it done.

The first step for your family member is to find out if their insurance covers the surgery. Then, there is probably a network of doctors, hospitals and surgeons they have to use in order to be covered. They will have to choose a surgeon that does bariatric surgery. Then, the weight maximum will be up to that surgeon. Some hospitals only have equipment that will suite a person up to a certain weight (such as beds, toilets, showers, scales, OR tables, etc.) If you family member is amoung the super morbidly obese and over 450 lbs, if may be necessary to appeal to the insurance company to let them go out of network so they can have the surgery as safely as possible in a facility that can accommodate oa person of their size.
