What am I supposed to do about this?

I’m 5’2" & weigh 281 lbs. My chest hurts within 2 minutes of walking, when I try to walk for exercise. & he said the only thing he can recommend is surgery because he said diet & exercise alone will not help me lose weight. & he said that the Medicaid & Medicare insurance won’t cover the surgery.

I’m so scared. He said I need either lap band or gastric bypass. He said pills wouldn’t even help. My psychiatric medication makes me eat alot & I’ve gained lots of weight over the years & can’t take it off.

You are not 400 pounds…why is "he" advising surgery??? You can successfully lose weight through diet and exercise…get in touch with an organization in your neighbourhood.

i guess the best way is to keep trying. I personally don’t think surgery to get rid of fat is so great. You should try an excersizing hobbie, like swimming, basket ball, or even running on the board walk. It helps if you actually like doing it. And about eating a lot, try eating less but more meals. Like maybe a lite breakfast and then 4 hours later an apple, then 4 hours later lunch and so on.

If your insurance won’t pay for the surgery, then you need to do all that you can to try and take as much of the weight off as possible. I don’t believe that a doctor told you that you cannot lose any weight at all. The more frequently you walk, the more your body will become used to it. If your chest hurts from walking after two minutes, then walk for two minutes every day for two weeks. After the two weeks is up, increase it to five minutes. Keep increasing the minutes with time. As for the eating part, you need self-control. Limit your portions and don’t snack on anything except fruit and water in between meals. Get a second opinion. have those problem. and am the same weight but taller, try a daily coated aspirin ask about a nitro patch, look in to Weight Watchers.. You eat normal foods. the meetings are fun and educational…

Can you possibly go to another doctor? Yours does not sound very helpful. Yes, surgery would help, but if it is not covered, it is not covered. There is no way that any of us would be able to pay for a surgery like that without insurance. You keep trying. Even if you only lose a pound a week that is better than nothing.

Does this unhelpful doctor say why your chest hurts? There are many overweight people and not everyones chest hurts while walking.

I know how it is to have a medication that either causes weight gain or makes it harder to lose. See about either changing doctors or about seeing a specialist – weight loss doctors are called Bariatric Specialists.

Sorry I can’t be of more help.
