Patients considering weight loss surgery often ask which procedure is right for me? At the New Jersey Bariatric Center both surgical weight loss procedures — gastric bypass or lap band — result in successful weight loss. The best way to make the decision regarding which procedure is best for you is to consider several factors: loss of pounds, reversibility, diet requirements and risk, and compare the pros and cons of them against your personal goals. Weight loss: Initial weight loss with the gastric bypass is approximately 3lbs to 5lbs per week for the first three to six months. Over 18 months the gastric bypass procedure results in approximately 60 to 70 percent excess weight loss. However, gastric bypass is both a restrictive (restricts the intake of food) and mal-absorptive (less absorption of calories you take in …

If your obese and are looking to lose weight and have tried diet and excerise then Restrictive surgery could be the answer. In a restrictive surgery e.g. gastric banding, the surgeon uses one of a variety of techniques to reduce the size of the stomach. After restrictive surgery, a person feels full faster, eats less, and hence will lose weight.

The full names for the two types of restrictive surgery for weight loss are:

Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding which id the most common form of restrictive surgery, and Vertical banded gastroplasty Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding

Laparoscopic gastric banding is often called gastric banding or lap banding and is the second most common weight loss surgery, after gastric bypass.

Gastric Lap band surgery will involves the following:

Using laparoscopic tools, the procedure will place an adjustable silicone band around the upper part of the stomach. Squeezed by this silicone gastric band, the stomach becomes a pouch with about an inch-wide outlet. After banding, the stomach can only hold about an ounce of food, so you will feel full alot faster. A plastic tube runs from the silicone gastric band to a circluar device just under the skin. Saline (sterile salt water) can be injected or removed through the skin, flowing into or out of the silicone band. By adding the saline the band can be tightened or loosened as needed.

Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding can help to reduce your weight by about 40% on average. So someone who is 200 pounds overweight could expect to lose an average of 80 pounds after gastric banding. However, these results vary widely depending on the person.

Gastric banding is considered the least invasive form of weight loss surgery and is also the safest too. The procedure can be reversed if necessary and the stomach generally returns to its normal size.

Gastric Lap banding surgery has a low complication rate. The most common problems after lap banding surgery include:

Nausea and vomiting. Can by reduced by adjustment of the banding. Minor surgical complications occur less than 10% of the time. These include problems with the adjustment device, wound infections, or minor bleeding. The risk of death due to lap banding surgery is about 1 in 2,000.

Unlike gastric bypass surgery, gastric banding does not interfere with food absorption but just the quanitiy of food thats taken. So vitamin deficenceny for people who had Gastric banding is rare.

Vertical Banded Gastroplasty (VBG)

Vertical banded gastroplasty also involves a similar plastic band placed around the stomach. In addition to the band the surgeon will staple the stomach above the band into a small pouch.

Vertical banded gastroplasty results in less weight loss, compared with other surgeries and also has a higher complication rate. Therefore due to this vertical banded gastroplasty is less common today as approx. only 5% of bariatric surgeons still perform this surgery.

Mixed Surgeries (Restrictive and Malabsorptive)

Restrictive surgery is an important part of nearly all weight loss surgeries. In the most common weight loss surgery, gastric bypass surgery, restrictive surgery is first done on the stomach. This “stomach stapling” creates a small stomach pouch.

The new stomach pouch is reconnected to a part of the small intestine further down. This leads to less food eaten (restrictive) and less food absorbed (malabsorptive).

If your considering Gastric Banding Surgery in the UK click here.

Overweight patients are at increased risk of blood clotting. After any surgery there is a risk of blood clotting due to the patients immobility. The main risk from post-surgery blood clots is a pulmonary embolism. This is a blood clot that forms in a vein somewhere in the body, frequently in the leg, and travels through the veins to an artery in the lung or heart. This type of blood clot is extremely serious and can cause heart attacks, stroke and damage to the lung tissue. Patients will be monitored post surgery for any small blood clots and may be given blood thinning medication to reduce the risk of blood clotting complications. Patients will also be advised to start light exercising as soon as possible after surgery to increase the flow of blood around the body.

During gastric bypass surgery the stomach is disconnected form the intestine and reconnected at a lower point. When this reconnection is made, there is a chance of the connection failing. a rare surgical complication following gastric bypass surgery is fluid leaking from this connection into the abdomen. Fluid leaked from the intestine or bowel into the abdomen can cause serious infections and even an abscess. Patients who do experience problems caused by damage to the connection between the intestines and the stomach will require surgery to drain the fluid and repair the leak.

Gastric bypass surgery involves the stomach being disconnected from the intestine and reconnected at a point lower down to reduce the distance food travels post-surgery – the restrictive method of gastric bypass surgery. When the stomach is reconnected to the intestine, the outlet that allows the food to pass from the stomach to the digestive tract may narrow as scar tissue forms. If the stomach outlet narrows and food is unable to leave the new smaller stomach pouch, patients will suffer severe vomiting and will require a corrective surgery. This complication is very rare and most patients do not suffer any complications due to the new connection between the stomach and the intestine.

A rare complication but a risk associated with any surgical procedure, a haemorrhage is internal bleeding that can be life threatening. The risk of haemorrhage following Gastric Bypass surgery is due to the blood vessels being cut to surgeons to create the smaller stomach pouch. If one of the blood vessels is not sealed properly when reconnected, internal bleeding can occur.

Gastric Bypass Roux-En Y can also cause complications such as hair loss and nutritional deficiencies.

Are you tired of being unable to lose weight, or of losing it, only to pile more back on afterwards? Have you tried one fad diet after another without success? Does your unhappiness with your weight affect your whole life, from your relationship with your partner, to not being able to play with your children or grandchildren as you would like to, or not being able to wear the clothes that you used to enjoy feeling good about yourself in? Do your children exclude you from social functions because of embarrassment of your size? Would you like to leave that fat behind?

During the last few years, many people have resorted to surgery, having a gastric band fitted to their stomach or gastric bypass or a stomach balloon. This often involves pre and post operative nerves, taking time off work and a hefty bill often of £7,000 and upwards.

Using hypnotherapy, NLP and CBT techniques, at Headstrong Solutions a Virtual Gastric Band can be ‘fitted’, giving the client the same feelings which would be experienced with surgery, but without the discomfort, inconvenience and cost. This allows the client to lose weight steadily and safely. The client begins to eat more slowly and chew their food until it is the consistency of mashed potato or puree so it will move through the system in comfort. Eating smaller portions becomes the norm because the sub-conscious mind is convinced that its stomach has shrunk to half its size and has a Virtual Gastric Mind Band. The client soon learns to eat only when they are hungry and stopping when they have had enough just like they did when they were small children enabling them to lose their weight naturally without thinking of dieting.

An initial consultation is made to ensure the client is suggestible to hypnosis, and the Virtual Gastric Mind Band is ‘fitted.’ A follow up appointment a week later to monitor progress and make any adjustments which may be necessary. A third appointment will continue to monitor the weight loss and ensure that it is maintained, it is however, recommended that the client stays with us for as long as is necessary to lose the weight which they feel comfortable with.

A personalized CD is made of each consultation, which can be played in the comfort of your own home to further strengthen the hypnotic suggestions. The cost of the whole treatment is £275, no matter how much weight you want to lose and however long you choose to stay with us.

The Benefits

Virtual gastric band without surgery No fears before or after treatment No gastric bypass complications Gastric mind band at a fraction of the cost of surgery No need for diets Resume work within 45 minutes

One of the most recent developments in Bariatric (stomach/gastric bypass) surgery is the gastric lap band procedure.

This Gastric Lap Band procedure involves contracting a portion of your stomach to reduce its size. This helps limit the amount of food that you are able to eat. This is different than the other types of gastric surgery, which result in your digestive system being re-routed.

This type of sugary can work for the right candidate (usually someone who is severely obese and not just a few pounds overweight) who follows the doctors and the surgeons exact orders. Those who want to lose weight and want to undergo Gastric Lap Band Surgery will have to properly prepare for the day of surgery and be aware of the risks involved.

Some restrictions that the doctor or surgeon may tell you before you receive your treatment will be to refrain from alcohol or certain types of foods for at least a short period of time before your surgery. You may also be asked to stop smoking as well. Also, your doctor will prepare you for all the possible complications that can happen after a surgery like this.

Some of the most common complications after gastric lap surgery could include one or more of the following: constipation, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. Furthermore, patients can very sensitive to foods such as sugars and alcohol, which they can eat very little of.

There are more severe complications from this surgery. This can include coming undone, infection, upper respiratory problems, pneumonia, blockage or leaking around area of treatment, or ulcers. Again, these are rare, and most people recover fairly quickly, within approximately 6 to 8 weeks.

There are also a very tiny percent of other failures that could result from this procedure as well, and a .5 to 2 percent chance of death. This is a very small percentage, and the medical professionals who perform this surgery will usually run extensive analysis on you before deciding if this surgery is right for you.

After the surgery, you may have to follow a special diet. To begin with, for up to a week after the surgery you will be on an all-liquid diet. Then, for 14 days you will be assigned to eat all pureed foods. Then, you will begin returning to solid foods. However, there are some foods you may need to avoid such as certain breads (usually ones with enriched flour), dried fruit, nuts and coconuts, popcorn, fried foods, and pasta.

You will be advised to take up to a half hour to eat your meal, even though your meal will be quite small (because you will not be able to eat nearly as much). Also, you will want to make sure that you eat low fat foods and make sure you consume plenty of vitamins and minerals.

In addition, you will be told to stop eating once you feel full, otherwise you will experience great discomfort, and you will also be likely to gain weight. Also, you may have to wait after your meal to drink liquids, because both together can pass through your systems too quickly when taken in at the same time. Along with that, you will want to make sure that you drink plenty of liquids between meals to continue to work your digestive system.

Your entire lifestyle after your gastric Lap Band Surgery is likely to change dramatically. For one, you will be advised only to eat three times a day (sometimes more times a day in smaller amounts) but never to snack in between meals.

In order to make the gastric Lap Band Surgery work for you, it is going to take some effort on your part. However, if you follow through with the doctors orders regarding the proper diet adjustments, stick to a regular exercise routine, and follow through on the rest of your doctors orders, you will soon have a better quality of life.

If you are someone who thinks you could benefit from Lap Band Surgery you may want to consult your doctor about it. Then, if you want to meet with a surgeon, your surgeon will run tests on you and ask you questions about your health history.

Once you are aware of all that you need to know, you are ready to have your life changed for the better. Being prepared for this type of surgery will increase the chance that it will work for you.
