Gastric Bypass surgery & Pregnancy?

When I got pregnant with my daughter in 2004 I was 1 year out after having Gastric Bypass Surgery. Before surgery i weight 250. I lost 100lbs by the time I got pregnant. Gained 10 pounds throughout my pregnancy and lost 20 when I had her! I was considered a high risk pregnancy and was monitored carefully. My daughter was born 2 weeks early and VERY healthy, although she was only 5 pounds 3 ounces. 18 inches long. We are TTC #2 and I am now about 4-5 years out of surgery. I do have low iron & anemia because of the surgery. I am on prenatal vitamins & iron pills and they are working pretty good on getting my levels up some. My question is…Since it has been 4-5 years since my Gastric Bypass surgery, would I still be conisidered a high risk because of my low iron & anemia? And will i be monitored like I was during my first pregnancy?
Jill,
Thank you VERY much for your answer. :)
Yes, my daughter was tiny most likely from not receiving all of the nutrients. The doctors didn’t say too much about it because after checking her out thoroughly she was extremely healthy, although small. Even stays above her age level in learning :) Even now, being 4-5 years out of surgery my body still does not absorb the nutrients it should. That is why I am on both prenatal AND iron pills prescribed by the doctor in order to bring my levels to a normal rate. And to get my body prepared for another baby. Hopefully VERY SOON! :)
Thank you again for your quick response and great answer! :)

Gastric band or really tight belt?

Most people gain a few pounds over christmas and resort to some extreme diets. I was just wondering if a really tight belt could be as effective as a gastric band, because belts are cheaper.

Gastric bypass versus Lap band surgery?

Hello everyone before I ask this question I ask you to please not tell me your opinion on the surgery if you do not agree with either one..that is not what I am asking, I am simply asking this question to people who have struggled with health problems from weight and are in support of my decision to follow through with bariatric surgery.
I am 228lbs and 5 ’1 , I am diabetic, anemic, have high blood pressure, cholosteral, have severe sleep apnea, and severe GERD with a hernia. I am trying to decide which surgery to do and my surgeon is leaning towards gastric bypass…any experiences, or stories and advice I would greatly appreciate.

Gastric Bypass Surgery or Exercise? ?

Ok, so imagine you’re 300pounds at 16 years old. You know you have to lose teh weight in order to live a better life. Would you rather exercise your way back to maybe 150pounds? Or would you rather get gastric bypass surgery?

Personally I would exercise because at least I would feel good about myself knowing that I am now stronger and thinner, than getting bypass surgery which costs ,00-,000. This is what the surgery does: it makes your stomach smaller from about the size of a football to the size of a golf ball. Plus, after you get it, you HAVE to take your vitamins and pills every day of your life, and you have to eat your meals 6 times a day all separately a little bit at a time.

At least if I exercise I’d be able to eat whatever the hell I wanted and plus not only would I be thing, but I’d have muscles, I’d be stronger, maybe get some abs, etc.

So guys, how about you?
Uuummm, yea guys, just so you know, I’m NOT overweight, this is just a hypothetical question.

A question about the Gastric surgery………………?

My SIL had the gastric surgery about 3-4 weeks ago and its her birthday today and I had planned to get her a card and a cup cake but I don’t think she can eat it. So what can I get her in place of the cup cake? A yogurt cup, smoothie from jamba juice?
Just a little something she can enjoy on her birthday. She deserves it.
Thanks everyone.
EDIT: LOL@bays I didnt really think about that…. thats funny. Oops.

Gastric banding and the HSC?

I’m having trouble dealing with all my problems at once.

I’m doing the HSC – and I am quite a bright student. 4 units of English, Ancient and Modern History, Legal Studies, SOR 1… I do reasonably well, but could do better. I don’t have an excellent work ethic and my health problems are making it impossible to work effectively.

I also really dislike being at school. I have a weight problem, I have friends but we’re not super-close. That being said we’re all fond of each other, there is no drama. But my old friends make it difficult. I feel like they’re always talking about me, judging me. I feel like my teachers and peers are repulsed by me.

I don’t look as big as I am, if that makes sense, and I am far from ugly (if I can say that without sounding arrogant). But a weight problem is a weight problem, and I am tired of feeling uncoordinated, cumbersome and ill. I’ve tried so hard to lose weight "the normal way". I’ve been trying for over five years in earnest, but have resented my size since childhood.

I am very insecure and unhealthy. My BMI qualifies for gastric banding. I really want to have this procedure.

The problem is I would have to have a lot of time off for the surgery and I already have an unfortunate attendance record (due to always being ill).

I was thinking about having the year off to have the surgery, recover and lose some weight. Then I could start the HSC anew in Term 4 at a new school.

But then I worry about being in a new school and not knowing anyone, having bad teachers, etc. I also worry that the decision to essentially drop out and pick it up again in a few months will really disappoint my parents.

I’m a strong person and I’ve always dealt with my problems in a mature way, but I hate feeling like this, I hate my school and I feel like if I can find a way out; why shouldn’t I?

I would really like opinions on this, so if there is some serious flaw in my plan I can become aware of it.
