My son is 3 months old and has gastric reflux. He had an upper GI at 1.5 months to confirm his ‘condition’. He is currently on Zantac, 1ml 2x daily. It really doesn’t seem to help with the vomiting, but it seems to help his discomfort. He has good days and bad days with his vomiting. Unfortunately, we have had a string of bad days lately. I swear I’m about to buy him one of those funnel shaped collars you put on puppies. (not really, I’m not that horrible) – but sometimes I feel there is no other alternative.
How do you mommies deal with the mess? For example, tonight, he has already vomited 4 times in 2 hours. I don’t mind my clothes so much as the couch and furniture.
You mommies have any tricks to help keep the mess at a minimum?
I keep a burp rag or two under my daughters head constantly. When my daughter was diagnosed the doc prescribed zantac also, though with my daughter it helped loads with the vomitting.
Maybe that isnt the right medication for him. My daughter is on Prevacid for hers and she stopped spitting up. I’m not recommending any specific meds, just that maybe the one he is on isnt the best for him. Other then that all I do is burp often and how her up as long as possible after eating. I would talk to the doctor again.
i have not had this condition with my babies…….but, I can advise you get to a wrap and wear him after feedings to keep him upright and more content
if your wearing him upright gravity will help him keep food down, plus his contentment will keep him from crying, getting upset and thus vomiting from being upset with pain
good luck mama!
I’m sorry you are dealing with this! My daughter had chronic acid reflux, also. I made sure she was propped up while lying down (sleeping, playing). She was on Zantac, too, but didn’t seem to do any good for the projectile vomiting. She was given that formula with rice in it, but still no results from it. I ended up just carrying around those cloth diapers with me everywhere and dressing her with many bibs throughout the day. Lots of laundry, but at least it washes out… most of the time anyhow. Good luck and congratulations on your newborn!
Check with your Pediatrician, there are multiples of Medicines that can be prescribed. EX (Prevacid and he can be on more than one). Ask them to send you to a pediatric specialist(Pediatric Gastroenterologist), if they havent already.
Another thing I strongly recommend, my Pediatric GI doctor recommends feeding the babies about 2-3 spoons of rice cereal(prepared) before feeding(bottle or breast milk) this helps with the spitting up. Remember your baby is only 3 months old, so you are not giving him the cereal to get filled up it is just as a blocker for the reflux. Feed him at least 15-30 mins before the bottle. And DO NOT put the cereal in the bottle. This only defeats the purpose of the cereal to be able to help with the reflux.
Hope this helps. Dont worry a lot of babies go through this and grow out of it when they reach about 7-9 months.
It might not be just reflux…. my son was diagnosed the same. He has been on Zantac since week 3 taking 1 ml 2x daily. For a few weeks it seemed to get better but after about a month or so the vomiting seemed to get worse… he got really fussy… really gassy…
He was spitting up so much I was changing my clothes several times a day and his
I was on YA and reading other sources and thought I would try non dairy diet for a week and see what happened and miracle baby appeared!!
So I talked to his doctor and we went another week without dairy then I ate cheese to test it… and sure enough within an hour the vomiting started. So my 3.5 mo old has a milk allergy and I am on a 100% dairy free diet.
So if you are breastfeeding… try going without dairy for a week or two… it takes several days for the milk to get out of your and baby’s systems. If you are formula feeding switch to soy and monitor baby for a week or so.
Good Luck!!
If it happens that its not dairy … it could be an allergy to something else. Or you just might need to up the medication dosage. The doctor was going to up my sons dosage until we figured out it was milk causing all the trouble.
