that is absolutely NOT true. I had gastric bypass surgery 3 1/2 years ago, and I feel better than ever. A long as you follow the doctors orders and make sure you keep up on taking supplements and eat like you are supposed to, you will live a long and healthy life. It was being morbidly obese that made me feel like I was heading for an early death. I have no regrets at all

I don’t know what the studies suggest, I can only tell you from personal experience. My aunt had gastric bypass after struggling with severe obesity for years. She was barely 5 ft tall and weighed over 300lbs. 7 years ago she had gastric bypass surgery. Left with a huge amount of streched out skin she decided to have plastic surgery 5 years ago. She was happy for a while but started having some bizarre symptoms: fainting spells, vomiting, tired all the time, unable to move her legs, etc. Over the next 5 years she had spent time at Mayo and John Hopkins. They said they couldn’t figure out why her body could no longer absorb protien. She died 2 days ago at John Hopkins and was only 48 years old. When they performed the autopsy they discovered blood clots in her heart, lungs and brain. My aunt was a non-smoker and non-drinker, she was not obese all her life, only after the birth of her daughter. I don’t know if this helps you or not, but I felt that I needed to share her story.

I think life expectancy after having Gastic bypass could be increased-The surgery aids in weight loss and lowers your risk of medical problems associated with obesity.
I know of people that have had the procedure done in the 80′s and are still alive and kicking. Here’s a website for more information about the procedure: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/gastric-bypass/HQ01465
