Joining the Armed Forces with need of prescription medication?

I want to join the US Army or Marines, and that’s always been a dream of mine. However, I need to take prescription drugs to regulate certain things. Does the military give waivers to people who take prescription meds for gastric problems, such meds as Prevacid or Protonix? Do they give waivers to people who need to take meds to regulate anxiety problems, such as Prozac or Klonopin? All advice, especially former military, would be much appreciated!

Current or history of anxiety disorders (anxiety (300.01) or panic (300.2)), agoraphobia (300.21), social phobia (300.23), simple phobias (300.29), obsessive-compulsive (300.3), other acute reactions to stress (308), and posttraumatic stress disorder (309.81) are disqualifying.

Even if they gave you a waiver you would have to be off the medications for at least a year before you could try to enlist. You can’t take any medications with you to basic.

yes they do, if they take the illness theyll give you meds for it

by they take i mean stuff like anxiety they dont want, coz they dont want you going crazy on war and shooting everyone, but if you run out of gastric drugs and your tummy hurts like hell while pnned down its not gonna kill anyone directly, it may hinder their ability to defend, but your stomach isnt gonna pick up a gun…

It generally depends on what the issue is and then a doctor would decide if you are medically fit for duty. It won’t be your doctor. it will be theirs. If they think they cannot deploy you because you are going to need medical treatment, then they probably won’t accept you. They don’t want to send you over, just to turn around and send you back. Remember, there aren’t many medical people available in afghanistan and some overseas countries to treat minor problems. In a combat zone they only want to see you for something major.

    Yes and No.
If you are on anxiety meds and you want to get into a place that is nothing but stress, yeah that’s a big dis-qualifier right there. If you have an existing condition that you are under a Dr’s care for, there are only a few things that will get you a waiver. The type you listed here are not them. Look at it from this perspective. You suffer from anxiety, you are out in the field for an extended period, you run out of meds or are unable to take them, you start taking fire, rising the stress level to the nth degree, both you and the troops relying on you are now all dead because you were unable to function properly.
