Gastric bypass is MAJOR surgery. It can be done laparoscopically (through a small incision using a camera) but it’s still very serious surgery that takes anywhere from one to four hours. It requires general anesthesia and a significant recovery period.
The Lap Band is also surgery and it too can be performed laparoscopically. Both of these procedures are done in a hospital and neither is covered under MOST insurance plans. They can cost anywhere from $10,000 up. However, the Lap Band can be done as an outpatient procedure.
This is not an easy way out. Once the weight is off, you are left with excess skin that usually requires further surgery to remove as a cosmetic procedure. This is also not covered by insurance and can cost as much as the gastric bypass or Lap Band surgery. Furthermore, complications can be catastrophic and there have been studies emerging that suggest the long-term success rates are significantly lower than those in the first five years. Many, many people report gaining back much of the weight they lost.
A few surgeons will conduct gastric bypass and lap banding procedures on an outpatient basis, generally for younger patients and those who are less severely overweight. This *can* be done in a freestanding office but a lot of surgeons are associated with hospitals.
