You will find that you will get a wide variety of answers to this question. Everyone deals with this differently.

First off diarrhea…very few people get that. Generally the problem is the opposite. I did get diarrhea, but of all the hundreds of people who I have heard talk about the aftereffects of the surgery, mostly the problem is the opposite. The staff at your hospital will give you medications to help you go, not to stop you from going.

I had open surgery. That is more difficault in the beginning weeks than laproscopic. There are some things that are pretty common afterwards. The most prevalent for women is depression or HUGE PMS. Hormones have been stored in your fat and since the fat is being excreted in your waste, hormones are released. You will need to guard against this because depression can keep you from taking care of yourself after surgery. Taking care is very very important right after surgery to keep you hydrated and out of the hospital again.

You will need to exercise daily, drink 48-64 oz of non-caffeinated, non-carbonated, sugar free beverages, eat around 70 gr of protein, take vitamins and minerals, and use plenty of moisturizers. You will get a lot of info from your specialists that you will be required to visit before you get the surgery. Listen carefully because what they tell you will help you cope with the day to day events.

I belong to a Yahoo group called Weight Loss Surgery Friendship & Support. There are many people who belong who are willing to share their experiences because they want you to succeed. There is too much to tell you from your question to cover here, but come join us and ask as many questions as you want. I can tell you that the more you know about the after-surgery experience, the better your results. besides, all the studies show that the people who join a support group do much better with this surgery than those who don’t.

    Good Luck.

I had this surgery many many years ago I have no regrets. Although you must know this is not a easy thing to do or get through. I didn’t have a problem with diarrhea, but I did have other complications that I had to have repaired with more surgery. The next surgery I had was harder to get through,And I had many complications from it. With all the other alternatives that they have now, with the support groups that they have I would consider those first. They didn’t have the programs that they have now when I got my stomach surgery done. When it works it seems to work well, but there are people that I personally know that it didn’t work for them.Make sure you have considered all other alternative’s before doing something so drastic. Good luck to you!!
