How to support a friend who just had gastric bypass surgery?

my friend came out of surgery this afternoon and I’m going to visit her tomorrow around 6pm… anyone who has had the surgery and can tell me what you wish someone would have brought you in the hospital? OR anything I should absolutely not bring. I was thinking magazines, some lotion, maybe lip balm… can’t think of anything else and all that seems lame compared to how much I want to show support…

We were just talking about this in the Yahoo group for weight loss surgery. We came up with those moistened towelettes. They would be refreshing and not something most people would bring.

If you wanted to bring more of a gift you could try a photo album to fill with pictures of her progress. It becomes amazing to us to watch how much we change even when we don’t think we have changed.

Also, if you wanted to give her support, which is very important to her success, tell her to join our online group. It is Weight Loss Surgery Friendship & Support. There are a great bunch of people who belong to that group who are very willing to share their ups and downs. She would feel very welcome there.

You are a good friend, and those first few months she will need your support.

Lip balm was wonderful after surgery. Lips get sooo dry! Magazines would be great too.

The thing is.. on the first day and second day, you’re really kinda out of it. Not so much on the second day.

Company was nice to have, especially during the mandatory walks.

A cute idea might be a disposable camera.. to take before and after pics with as her journey progresses. It’s truly amazing to look at my before pics and compare them to me today!
