Honestly, it depends on you. I went with the gastric bypass because it was what I wanted. I am 11 weeks post op and almost 70 pounds are gone. Long term? In all the research that I have done, there are a lot of people who have gone from the lap band to the bypass. I suggest going to obesityhelp.com and join, they have everything you’ll ever need to know right there.

lap band. Unlike the bypass, lap band is adjustable. You follow your progress with your doc and depending on how much weight you’ve lost, you can have more fluid added to your band to cause more restriction when eating….whenever! At first its every 3 weeks, then you spread it out more after you’ve hit your "sweet spot" of comfortably eating less and steadily losing.
While the gastric bypass patients have heard bad things about lap band surgery, I’ve heard plenty of complications with gastric bypass! Lap band is safer, there’s less risk of complications, it doesn’t involve cutting up your stomach or re-arranging anything.
People have adjusted easily to the bypass and now they’re gaining weight back [I'm a member on several weight loss surgery sites and I see it all the time!] while lap banders can just go in and get a "fill" and they’re back to losing weight.
Lap band does take more work though. You can’t sit on the couch and eat cheese doodles and still lose weight like you can with the bypass. You have to incorporate a lot of exercise and a really healthy diet.
