First, you have to have a BMI over 40, or a BMI over 35 with co-morbidities. Then, most insurance companies require a six month physician monitored weight loss program. If you are even THINKING of gastric bypass surgery, get that started NOW!

Do your research as to which surgery option you want. The three biggest are the Gastric Band, the RNY, and the Duodenal Switch. The DS will allow you to live the most normally, but it is also completely irreversible, unlike the other two.

And don’t let people scare you about the surgery. Most people who speak negatively about it speak from ignorance, and the worst thing about ignorance is its insistence. The surgeries are usually done laproscopically, and if your surgeon you picked doesn’t do it laproscopically, find a new surgeon. The mortality rate for knee replacement surgery is about four times higher than for GBP surgery.

Remember, this is a last resort. It is also your best chance for a new life.

And anyone who says it is "the easy way out" is an ignorant fool, so dismiss everything they have to say about anything.
