You can call medicare and find out for sure. I believe they pay for 80% of medical costs for just about anything. That’s why people have to get that supplement insurance to cover the other 20%. They would also have to approve you for the surgery which does have requirements in order to qualify. Your first step though should be to call them and find out for sure. Good luck. They are usually pretty good at helping people. They were always good to me when I had questions regarding my mother’s medicare.

You should check with your insurance plan that you have under Medicare to see if that is one of the covered benefits. I know that some Medicaid plans do cover that surgery.

There are 5 basic types of bariatric surgery. Medicare will not cover sleeve gastrectomy or vertical gastric banding. They will cover Roux-en-Y bypass (RYGBP), Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch (BPD/DS), and Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding (LAGB) under the following conditions: You must have a BMI of greater than 34, you must have at least one co-morbidity related to obesity, and you must have been previously unsuccessful with medical treatment for obesity. In addition, these procedures are only covered when performed at facilities that are certified by the American College of Surgeons as a Level 1 Bariatric Surgery Center or certified by the American Society for Bariatric Surgery as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence.

You can find approved facilities by searching on this website: http://www.cms.gov/center/coverage.asp If you contact these facilities they will help your further. When I searched there were 12 facilities within Illinois.
