I am asking for my friend who does not have a home computer. She has had the rouen y, and frequently while eating she becomes very uncomfortable. She says its as if the food gets stuck on its way down. She feels quite ill and must lay down for a bit. And then all of the sudden it loosens and she feels better. Does anyone know what is really happening?

If she becomes uncomfortable during a meal she should stop eating,
You see her stomach after the operation is roughly the size of an egg.
Now it will stretch to the size of a cup in about a year.
For the first 6 weeks after the operation her diet should consist of liquid/pureed food. Soft in consistency, scrambled egg, cottage cheese, sugar free yogurt, mashed potatoes. She should eat small frequent meals, five or six through out the day.
This operation is actually called the Roux en y Anastomosis, sometimes the Gastric Bypass. The surgeon who first performed the operation was named Roux and he lived in Paris and did the first operation in 1954.
I had the Roux en y in Cleveland Clinic in 1986. The next morning after the surgery I was on IVs, but I remember the first breakfast they gave me was a soft egg and toast, I took two bites of the egg and I was full.
And I tried for a bite of toast and I had that uncomfortable feeling.
Tell her to eat slowly, chew her food well, it should take her about an hour to eat a meal. If she tries to eat a normal meal, the food will back up into her esophagus, and she will get that uncomfortable feeling.
And you do feel quite ill, when the food sits in the esophagus. It is indeed stuck.

Hope this helps. She will also need follow ups for the doctor to see if she is getting all the nutritional requirements she needs. I became anemic afterwards and am still taking shots for it twice a month, 22 years later. The Roux en y is a life changing experience, and that is why they are so careful who they will give it to. By 1988, two years later I was working full time and I even did little theater, in the summer.
